THE CAULDRON AND ROOSEVELT WAREHOUSE is the gallery installation half of a project based on Roosevelt Warehouse, a former post office building and Detroit public schools warehouse. After documenting and using the warehouse as a source of materials for over 10 years, this project focused on recent years, culminating with an installation at U of M's Institute for the Humanities. Abandoned after a fire in the 80s, the building stored everything that could possibly be used in a public school. Slowly scrapped clean, it became a de facto homeless shelter once the neighboring MCTS was fenced, and the flooded basement became home to weekend urban hockey games. In January of 2009, the body of a man was found frozen in the ice, and the building was re-boarded soon after. The only access point left – an underground conveyor from the post office days – became my entry / exit for the completion of this project. I excavated and gathered hundreds of modern artifacts, which were displayed, named, and classified in a pseudo-scientific manner. At the center of this installation was The Cauldron, constructed from 632 schoolbooks cryptically titled “Discoveries.”
