OLD is a site-specific installation at David Klein Gallery, Detroit. Based on personal history, Detroit history, catacombs, burial mounds, ancient ceremonial sites, cycles of life/death, alchemical transformations, obscure objects of worship, unknown machinery, the Old Copper Complex, my Cornish copper mining ancestors, copper scrapping in Detroit, and a dream I had in the Florida Keys, the installation includes over 1,000 patinated copper-clad cast-gypsum human bones, salt, and sand, weighs approximately 1 ton, and buttressed the fluted, structural central column of DKG. Flanking the central work are cast bronze sculptures - Earth 1 and 2 - that have shown up a lot in my work over the years: These celestial sewer spheres are inspired by grates, globes, astrolabes, astrology, planets, stars, orbs, shells, cages, drains, filters, thresholds, myticism, the hollow earth - they also mimic rib cages, which protect us bust also trap us in mortal bodies / the earthly plane; Rib cages is still a cages. Along with these works are a pair of mixed media sculptures - Anima and Animus - that are inspired by the Richard Wilhelm translation of the Taoist text The Secret of the Golden Flower (1931). The exhibition also showcased corresponding photography projects.
